New Signature on Australian 20 dollar note

Australian 20 dollar notes with the signature of Glenn Stevens have now entered circulation.

Glenn Stevens replaced Ian Macfarlane, as Governor of the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA), on 18 September 2006.  Prior to this appointment, Glenn Stevens had been Deputy Governor of the RBA since 2001; he has held various appointments with the RBA since 1980.

The second signature on the note is that of Dr Ken Henry, who has been Secretary to the Treasury since 2001.

These 20 dollar notes (with the signatures of Stevens and Henry) were obtained from an automatic teller machine (ATM) in a Melbourne (Victoria, Australia) suburb during the week 12 to 17 November 2007.

Australian polymer notes are dated in that the last two digits of the year of printing are included in the serial number.  In the above example (which is on the Stevens / Henry 20 dollar note):

·                       the prefix (BJ) indicates the position of the note on the sheet of notes (prior to their cutting into individual notes);

·                       the first two numerals (07) indicates the year of printing (2007);

·                       the last six numerals (823995) is the actual serial number (the notes are numbered from 999999 down to 000001).

It is believed that all Australian notes printed in 2006 have the signatures of Macfarlane and Henry.  At this stage it is not known which denominations (other than 20 dollar) will be printed in 2007.
