The End of an Era

As I opened my latest Status International auction catalogue I was dismayed to learn that after over 40 years I.S.Wright are literally closing shop in Melbourne. The shop at 241 Lonsdale Street opened in 1981 after being purchased from Coin Buyer’s International. On opening Derek Tomsett was appointed manager, followed by Lawrie Nugent, Steve Nugent, adn then Bill Baker. Dave Carr, the current manager, took that role in 1999 and is still there when the shutters come down 33 years later. With Downies closure of their premises in Southgate and now I.S. Wright’s this leave Max Stern & Co. at 271 Collins Street the only coin shop in the CBD.
