ANDA & the NAV: 20 Years of Service to Victorian Numismatics

The Numismatic Association of Victoria is proudly celebrating 20 years of numismatic exhibitions supported by the Australasian Numismatic Dealers Association (ANDA).

A Brief History of Numismatic Exhibitions

The Association has a long history of holding successful public exhibitions.  The NAV’s predecessor, the Numismatic Society of Victoria, celebrated it’s sixth anniversary in 1920 by holding a public exhibition of coins, medals and paper money at the Temperance Hall on 23rd March. In July of 1947 the NAV commemorated its first anniversary by holding an exhibition at Kurrajong House. The exhibition was opened by Mr. O.G. Reynolds, deputy Master of the Melbourne Branch of the Royal Mint and feature a rare Russian 3 Rouble coin struck during the reign of Nicholas II. The Association continued to put on exhibitions on a regular basis, and in October of 1964 the NAV held its seventh public exhibition at the Lower Melbourne Town Hall. It was opened by the then Federal Treasurer, Mr Harold Holt on the 26th.  During the three days, over 3,200 people visited the exhibition.

The obverse design features the   obverse of both a holey dollar and a dump and the legend “NUMISMATIC ASSOCN OF VICTORIA” curved below, and “SESQUI CENTENARY OF THE ISSUE OF” “THE HOLEY DOLLAR AND DUMP OF NEW SOUTH WALES” in two curved lines below.

The reverse has the legend “NUMISMATIC EXHIBITION” curved above, “MELBOURNE TOWN HALL OCTOBER 26•27•28” across the  centre, and the year “1964” between sprays of leaves at bottom            centre.  “K.G.L.” and “MELB.” are below the left and right sprays       respectively.

To commemorate the event, a brass medallet was struck for sale at that  exhibition.  The 28mm diameter piece was designed by Ray Jewell and struck by K.G. Luke, Melbourne, with a mintage of 2,037.

Featured displays covered a wide range of numismatics including Australasian tokens, early Australian coins, Ancient Greek and Roman coins, Australian Commonwealth coins, Australian gold coins, varieties of Australian Commonwealth coins, British war medals and Australian paper money.

Competitive Numismatic Exhibitions – Today

This year marks two decades of the Victoria numismatic community’s relationship with ANDA.  Since day one, our competition was open to all Victorian Numismatic Bodies and I am pleased to report that progressively, almost all state based numismatic bodies have actively participated in some form over the years.

For the clubs, these events are our best opportunity to promote the hobby.  Behind the scenes, many volunteers continue to contribute their valuable time and passion to encourage other collectors and show them the wide variety that numismatic encompasses.

There has always been symbiosis between the clubs and the dealers.  We continue to encourage our members to actively support the dealers and we thank them for their on-going support of us.
